Tille Fredach dies, was county's oldest
Matilda "Tille" Fredach, Portage County's oldest resident, died this morning at
age 111.
A lifelong resident of the county, she died at the Portage County Health Care
Center, where she had lived for 11 years.
"She was happy-go-lucky," said Charlene Cyran, a nurse who cared for Fredach
since she came to the center. "Everyone really loved her. she was the mascot of
the wing."
Fredach was active and would rise each morning at 6, did not want to take naps
and would go to bed at about 8 p.m., Cyran said.
"She never complained, and she liked to go go go," she said. " She was a very
active lady. she loved babies and animals.
Fredach who passed the centurion mark 11 years ago, celebrated her birthday last
month with a birthday cake and coffee at an open house at the center.
She was among a handful of residents in the state who were 109 or older,
according to state census figures.
Although she had some trouble with her hearing, eyesight and mobility, Fredach
had a good appetite and was not ill often, according to workers at the center.
She grew up speaking Polish and enjoyed speaking with visitors in the language.
Fredach formerly of 22 Elm St., was born Feb. 28, 1882, in Polonia, the daughter
of the late Leon and Frances Ostrowski. She grew up there, where she attended
rural schools.
She was married to Florian Disher on Nov, 5, 1900. The couple farmed in the town
of Plover, where they homesteaded 40 acres. He died in 1934.
She was married to Joseph Fredach in 1940. He died in 1954.
A grandson now runs the family farm at 13310 Birch St.
Fredach enjoyed knitting, and crocheting and had a small garden in her back
yard. She maintained her home until the age of 91, when she moved in with
members of her family in Stevens Point.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Bronislava Church in Plover
with the Rev. James Logan officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Dzikoski/Pisarski Funeral
